If the evening or the occasion is special, then there must be champagne or, in a more accessible version, sparkling wine. In Poland, it is most often called champagne, it describes any sparkling wine, which is a big mistake. Champagne is a protected name reserved for sparkling wines produced by a specific method in the Champagne region. These wines are very expensive. The most common sparkling wines on the market are Spanish cava , Italian prosecco and French crémant . Sparkling wines are found in most wine countries - in Germany they are called sects , in Portugal they are called espumante , but they do not always have a specific name assigned to a specific region or country.
A little cheat sheet on the labels on sparkling wine bottles:
-
brut nature (very dry)
-
extra brut
-
brut - This is a typical position for an aperitif or to combine with food. Usually it is slightly dry, which suits people with different taste preferences.
-
extra dry, extra sec, extra seco
-
dry, sec, seco - this is a semi-sweet version. In the case of still wine, it means dry, but on a bottle of champagne it will indicate a wine with a distinct sweetness.
-
demi sec, semi seco
-
doux, sweet, dulce (sweet wine)
