"The right combination of gin and  vermouth is great and full  glory.

This is one of the happiest marriages we have ever had  earth,

and one of  shortest lives. "

Bernard de Voto

Gin  it was originally invented at a university in the Netherlands  as medicine. Its creator,   dr   Franciscus de la Boë, he was looking  a diuretic to prevent kidney stones.   At the end of the 17th century, Gin found his way to Great Britain where  it was spread by English soldiers returning  from the Dutch 80 Years War. There they drank their allowance "genever", which boosted morale - they called it "Dutch courage" - which then became the English expression for drunken courage.

There is probably no one who would not know the two most important drinks with gin in the lead role: Gin & Tonic and Dry Martini.

First  left  invented by  officers  British  in colonies. To protect yourself from  malaria  transmitted by mosquitoes,  they drank quinine. A bitter medicine  tasted much better in the form of a drink. After all, that soldier's drink must have been much bitter than today - today  tonic  already includes  only trace amounts of quinine.

Gin is definitely more than vodka based on juniper extract. For the production of high-quality gin, pure grain or cane alcohol is used, which is then added  is added  herbal ingredients  (so-called botanicals) and diluted  to the required power. Exact list of gin components  is  closely guarded  mystery  producer's.  It is known, however, that he usually adds gin to the production  myself  - apart from  juniper - licorice, angelica, anise, coriander, cumin, lemon, lime or orange peel, iris and calamus rhizomes, and even bitter almonds.

The word Vermouth comes from Germany, which means wormwood. It is described as an aromatized wine, the colors of which range from broken white, straw-colored to intense yellow, with a taste ranging from sweet to almost dry and sour.

The origins of Vermut  date back to ancient Greece, it seems that its creator was Hippocrates, who macerated wine with wormwood and other spices, resulting in a drink known  then as "Hippocrates." Over the years, other ingredients such as almonds, cinnamon, and honey have been added. Pharmaceuticals even flavored wines by grinding herbs and plants and then adding them to the drink. The art of adding flavor  there was a fault  domain  monks, doctors and alchemists.

Vermouth  it is made of white wine.  Red vermouth  achieved by adding caramel. Various herbs are used in the production process, which are appropriately added depending on the type of vermouth.  The alcohol content varies between 16 and 19 percent. Vermouth is a staple ingredient in many cocktails such as Negroni , Buñueloni, Americano, Campari 2000, Manhattan, Rob Roy, or Dry Martini.

Vermouth is produced by many brands:  Italian Gancia (from 1850), Ballor (from 1856), Cinzano (from 1860), Martini (from 1863);  French Noilly Prat (from 1843) or Spanish Yzaguirre (from 1884) .

Second  popular  drink it  Dry Martini. The origins of Dry Martini are not entirely clear. According to one theory, it was drunk as early as the 19th century, it was called Martinez cocktail, and it was a mixture of Old Tom gin and sweet vermouth.

James Bond, on the other hand, always drank a martini with vodka, shaken, not stirred.

Remember to always serve food when serving alcoholic cocktails. Perfect for this  tapas.   Not only is food a great companion for alcohol, it also plays a role  basic _  role in  its absorption.
